Faces of the Huang Fuwang Family

by FBTL1218 on September 1, 2010

Joanna is on the left and one of the staff for Keyway, China and she is a migrant and is now reaching out to the fringe population in Suzhou.  Huang Fuwang is a 16 year old boy who recently graduated from Xinxu Middle School.  His hometown is Heze in Shandong Province. When asked what his plan is after graduation, he confidently said that he is interested in becoming a mechanic.  Working as a mechanic will not only provide him a job, but also allow him to provide better life for his family.

His parents work at a bicycle repair shop.  At the age of 16, he has become the main provider for the family because his father is too old and weak to work.  His mother was also ill.  She endured an operation that drained their savings.  Medical insurance is nearly unheard of within the migrant community; therefore, an operation is a huge financial burden on the family.  They now have to start their savings all over again.

His mother has recovered from the surgery and works about 50 hours a week as a housekeeper.  Her salary is $0.66 cents per hour.  Fuwang also has a younger sister, Huang Fucui, who is 6 year old girl and attends migrant school kindergarden.  Despite the seemingly desperate circumstances, the entire family is enthusiastic and hopeful.  It is our hope that the next time we visit Fuwang will be learning to become a mechanic.  Faces Behind the Label will follow this story and continue to ask for your support on migrant families like these that we are reaching out to, by showing the love that we care and will walk with them through life.  Thank you Keyway for your work with the communities in your area.
